RICHARD GUZMAN
INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER. WOODWORKER. PILOT.
Profile
My name is Richard Guzman and I’m a professional designer. A vague way of saying I solve problems, develop products for mass production, and strive to keep customers happy with human focused experiences. I get lost in complex problems and all their potential solutions, sometimes it works out :) In addition to my day job I'm an avid wood worker and more recently a private pilot. Basically I can't sit still and most likely never will. There's too much to do because that's the way I like it.
2008 . 2013 | Auburn University Bachelors of Industrial Design
I officially found Industrial Design in college, but was living that dream well before then. Childhood was only training for a misguided attempt at Mechanical Engineering, only to find my true future in design. In my last years at Auburn I was a shop assistant, helping students visualize their designs using the metal, woodworking, molding and finishing labs. I learned the importance of plans and drawings by watching new students show up to the shop with neither :) Always fun to listen and watch the hand waiving, as they asked for help.
2013 . 2014 | Dell Intern
Had the opportunity to work for Dell as a contractor in a post grad internship. It Was exciting, having grown up building my own PCs. I learned the business, design process and created friendships that would eventually lead me back to Dell two years after my contract ended.
2014 . 2016 | HEWN Industrial Designer
Having an interest in European kitchen design led me to HEWN. Out of many custom molding and woodworking fabricators, HEWN had the best talent and widest manufacturing capabilities. I played a part in hundreds of projects in only two years. It was a smaller company so I wore every hat at one time or another. After a short tour, I had become proficient in joinery, woodworking, metal work, finishing, drafting, CNC programming, communication of design intent with other employees, and BOM creation. I worked on the floor and in the office. When projects were ready for install I was in the field checking quality. Working with Austin's interior designers and Architects to make their clients vision a reality pushed me to learn more than I ever had in such short time.
2016 . NOW | Dell Senior Industrial Designer
I returned to Dell during a pivotal time for the company. It was then private, running under Michael Dell again. The importance of good design was at the center of attention. I had no idea I was stepping into a group that would grow for years and create products that elevated Dell to the top of consumer and enterprise products. Dell pushes us to keep learning and to have an entrepreneurial spirit. This gave me the ability to learn new skills in modeling and a rewarding side project Encoded Forms. Since then I've been ID lead on several Tower Servers and most recently edge servers.
